In this article I will be discussing what you need to know and how to prepare in order for you to purchase a new, or replace an existing air conditioner. By doing a little home work, you can be certain that you have made the right choice. By buying an air conditioner that not only that suits your pocket best, but also ideally suits the location where you plan to install your new air conditioner to give you maximum comfort and enjoyment out of your new unit. In this article we will discuss questions such as, 'what is an air conditioning unit,' 'how large of a unit should I purchase', and 'what information should I take with me to the showroom'.

I would suggest you start by taking a tape measure, pen and paper, and write down the dimensions of the chosen location, be it kitchen, lounge, sitting-room, bedroom, or what have you. Length, depth, and most importantly, floor to ceiling height, for square or oblong shapes, for all other odd shapes make a drawing, and write in the dimensions for each shape, remembering the floor to ceiling height. Dimensions can be in either feet and inches, or the metric system. The object of this exercise is to determine the 'cubic capacity' of the area concerned, so that the contractor, or store salesman can correctly match the 'BTU' (British thermal units) output of any given conditioner to the space to be cooled, (or heated)

The next factor you need to make a note of is, the materials used in the construction of the room, i.e. is the floor wood or cement, same for ceiling, and walls, and in the case of outer walls are they cavity or solid. What type of insulation has been used, (if any) are the windows double glazed, how many doors are there, what is the room or area used for, these are important factors, for the salesman or contractor to know, in making a final decision as to BTU output. Obviously, a poorly insulated room with ill fitting windows and doors, and a high traffic rate will require a higher BTU output to maintain a given temperature.

Armed with this sort of information is likely to put you in a better light, with your salesman or contractor, rather than you arriving at the store saying you want to buy an air conditioner.
