Affiliate programs use a simple concept for you to create an income online: Earn commissions when the site you promote makes a sale. There are very few costs to set up the business, there are no advertizing costs, no inventory costs, and no fixed time commitments. For the person who is looking to earn extra money but already has a demanding job and limited schedule, this is a great way to get started.

Since starting the small internet business assistance program, I've visited with many people who feel like their opportunity to make money on the internet is past. Now, unless you are a billion dollar corporation, you just can't compete, but this is entirely false. There are many opportunities to make money on the internet and the diverse ways to profit is astounding. I am continually amazed at how much traffic and sales some of my own businesses get just because the site exists and has what the customer wants.

Affiliate programs are probably one of my favorite online business models because they have a smaller than average overhead and more importantly don't require specific time commitments. They are the type of business that you can work on when you have time, but when you don't have time you don't have to worry about them. Simply pick up again where you left off at another time. However, like all good business models, this is not a get rich quick scheme. The success of the program is proportionate with the amount of work you put in and the more work you do, the faster the site grows and the more revenue you can expect.

The concept of the Affiliate program is simple. Typically you start with a site that hosts many different affiliates, such as Commission Junction. From this host, choose the companies that you are interested in promoting and apply for approval. The company will then evaluate your website and either approve or disapprove. Generally they want to make sure that your site does not serve inappropriate content or could be construed as a "bad neighbor" because they will ultimately receive thousands of links from your site to theirs and they don't want to have those links negatively affect their brand. But pretty much any site can be approved because the company wants as many people as possible promoting their products.

When you site is approved, you will be directed to a special page where you can find products and links from the company with your unique affiliate number embedded in them. These links can be posted on your own site, promoted through e-mails, or through hundreds of other methods. As people click on that link, they are directed to the company website through a special code that registers the person that clicked and associates that person with your affiliate account. Thus, when they eventually make a purchase, the amount of their purchase is ultimately associated with your affiliate account and you receive a commission on the sale based on the agreement between you and the company.

The affiliate program is a simple and straightforward design. The success of the program rests largely on your ability to perform search engine optimization, to be patient, and be consistent. Thus, one of the best was to make an affiliate program work is to find a mentor that knows affiliate marketing and knows search engine optimization and can help you do it right. There are affiliates out there making hundreds of thousands of dollars each year, but these sites have been operating for many years now. If you want to be like them, you need to get started now and your need not get discouraged by seemingly slow growth to begin. Like every type of internet business, growth is an exponential curve that starts small and accelerates.
